EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

Your EMDR Journey

EMDR can be used to provide relief from almost any symptom, problem or behaviour that is causing distress in the here and now. Most commonly it is used to treat symptoms of PTSD which can develop after a stressful, distressing or frightening experience, and complex PTSD which may arise as a consequence of a prolonged traumatic history.

EMDR is a kind and gentle therapy which usually begins with targeting past memories that have laid the groundwork for dysfunction. The goal is to reduce the emotional charge or distress a memory carries to as low as is ecologically possible. This facilitates the brain’s natural healing process allowing the incident to be stored correctly in the long-term memory bank, where memories naturally fade with time. You will not be required to talk in detail about what happened. Not everyone knows the root cause of their problems, this is not a problem in EMDR as during the assessment phase we can use a range of techniques to help us pinpoint earlier experiences that have contributed to here and now problems.

Harnessing insight for present and future resilience

We will also look at present triggers and recent situations that you feel, or wish, could have been handled differently. EMDR will enable you to better understand your reactions, and how these have been influenced by learnings from past trauma. The final stage of EMDR is to use your new-found courage, confidence and wisdom to alleviate any future concerns, by creating positive experiences in the brain linked to dealing with predicted future scenarios.

Achieving your treatment goals requires commitment to the EMDR process and an open mind - it is different to conventional talking therapy and might feel 'weird' to begin with. However, EMDR is heavily researched and proven to be one of the most effective treatments for PTSD and Complex PTSD. However, two of the biggest underlying causes of poor mental health are trauma and stressful life events, whether that be historic or more recent. These do not always lead to a diagnosis of PTSD but can still cause significant symptoms that cause distress and impact quality of life.  Therefore, it is likely that you can benefit from EMDR regardless of whether or not you have a medical mental health diagnosis.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

Clients usually gain the most benefit from EMDR when sessions are attended on a weekly basis. I would encourage a commitment to at least 8 sessions to start with, as this will give a good feel as to if the technique suits your needs. With any form of counselling it’s hard to say how many sessions will be needed to resolve your issues. Complex presentations may require EMDR interspersed with talking therapy on a longer-term basis to ensure a full resolution of all issues.

If you would prefer to work intensively for faster relief from your symptoms we can discuss a treatment plan that incorporates more than one session per week.  Counselling and EMDR is a collaborative process, I work with clients to find a treatment plan that suits individual requirements and has the capacity to meet your goals for therapy.

All sessions are held online via video call. Telephone or audio only is not an option for EMDR.

If at any time you feel that EMDR is not for you, we can explore alternative therapy solutions and migrate across to a different modality. This will enable you to reach your therapy goals using a different pathway. If you would like a more in-depth overview of EMDR please take a look ‘A Deep Dive into EMDR’ for a broader explanation of the themes touched upon above.
